Argentine Boa Huffing?

Dubhead23 Nov 21, 2004 12:59 AM

OK I've had my Argentine boa for a year now and I noticed that she sort fo huhhs here and there and it seems to be more offen. I thought I read somewhere on here that it was normal but I thought I'd ask since she seems to be huffing more offen?

She's 7' long and in a Glass Terrarium right now if that helps any. I keep the Humidity between 70% and 80% and I can't get it any higher and the temp is between 80 and 85 in the cool side and 90 to 95 in the basking area. I'm hoping to Breed her so I've been letting the temp drop to about 75 at night so that before her next shed I can put the male in with her.

Any help would be really great!!!

Here she is:

I shoot for temps between 75-85 during the day, and drop it to 75-80 at night. Really, 60% humidity is great.

If you're trying to prime her for breeding....try lowering the night temp. to the upper 60's, and a daytime high in the lower 80's. Stop feeding her (if she is robust enough). Shorten her daylight hours and actually drop the humidity. Some breeders don't cool they're Boas at all and do fine, but I have found it helpful with BCO. I do this for 8 weeks or more and then introduce the male. They stay together through the spring until the female is gravid.

About the huffing....at first I thought you meant she was acting aggressively. But it sounds like there might be another issue. I would not take a chance. Take her to the vet. If there is a chance there is a health issue DO NOT ATTEMPT TO COOL/BREED HER. This will only hurt her chances of recovering from the health problem.

Take care, Chris O

Thanks for the help I'm taking her to the vet first thing tomorrow morning after I get off work. Then Enrique the male will be here on Tuesday Morning. Then I just neeed to complete my large enclosure for both of them. So I can wait till Jan to cool her and get ready to breed?

Oh and should she be thicker than she is right now? I feed her one large f/t rat every 5 to 9 days. I keep it changing a little so she doesn't get to know feeding time every week.

Thanks!!!

You could wait until January for temperature cycling. Argies are springtime breeders, which means they most likely will not breed until the temp. warms up and daylight hours increase. Wheather plays a role in getting them in the mood as well. When it starts to rain, throw the window open.

She looks heavy enough. Good muscle tone is a must...keep in mind, once you start cooling her...she may not eat anything for several months....possibly as long as 6 months.

The other thing to consider...are you sure you have a sexual pair? (a boy and a girl). Most Vets will probe a snake for you for about $15-25.

BTW-That's a really nice looking Argie.....
