Update on new "minimealworms"

InTheBlue Nov 21, 2004 11:21 AM

I ordered 1000 of these guys and have had them a few days. They are very tiny and you have to use a sain or sifter to get them out of the sawdust chips.......BUT......... wow are they active. Since i got my little Daisy she hasn't been a huge eater. Even on the silkies (which she eats more of) she just doesn't put away as much as she should..... With these guys OMG she goes nuts and eats them all up quick! She hasn't been a very good grower either but has already started taking a spurt and she's only been on them ofr a few days now. She's pooping noramly with no lumps in the stomache and her appetite is really awesome for these guys. You do have to feed alot of them but for slow growers or poor feeders these are awesome!!! I wouldn't recomend them for dragons over 7-8" as they are very small and it would cost a fortune to feed them. But WOW I can see what the lady in the add in Reptiles Magazine is talking about!!! These things would be GREAT for hatchling dragons!!!!

Hey Robert,

We're runnuing a test group with them here also. So far so good. Have you figured out how to breed these things yet? On their site they say there's a trick that they won't tell.

COOL! I'm gald I'm not the only one... we'll have to compare notes!! As far as breeding them..... I haven't had them but a few days. I would like to figure it out thogh.... It can't be to much different than regu;ar meal worms surely! If I had something new on the market like this I would say there is some kind of really hard procedure just to discourage attempts at taking my money/customers.....LOL.... I'm sure there is something like that going on.... What do you think?

I've found some scientific papers on them, one mentioned a winterizing process for them to pupate. I've only had them a few days also. I got in 5,000 of them which I pulled about 1000 off the top and figure I'll try a few different methods with about 100 ea. I'm not sure if they're going to be more like superworms or regular mealworms but it shouldn't be too hard to figure out. When I do figure it out I plan on posting it everywhere, I think it's dirty and cheap not to say how it's done and if they're lieing about a "trick" that's even worse lol. I'll keep you updated though.

So far I've fed them to 3 different dragons from 3 different clutches for 3 days at regular feeding times. No apparent problems so far. If it continues through the weekend without any problems I'm planning on jumping the test group to 30 (10 from each of the clutches) and we'll see what happens. If it works I think the possibility of being able to keep live food in front of babies at all times could lead to some really large healthy animals.

That's great! I only have one that is realy small enough to feed them to so my test group isn't as "scientific" LOL... but it seems to be doing good for her so far.

I would say that if there is a winterization process that is what they are calling the "big secret". LOL......

The thought of live prey in front of babies at all times is what I was trying to get across with the silkies too. But the feeding response for me so far on these guiys is through the roof as opposed to the silkies. Course the silkies are still my preferred choice unless we can figure out how to get some colonies going with these guys! Really great for hatchlings.

Where can I order those minimealies? I'm having a similar problem with my little female. See eats, but not enough, and she's barely grown in the three weeks I've had her. I figure I can give those minimealies a try and see if they work for her.

Hey guys - I'm thinking about getting 1,000 of these in for my picky eater (10.75" at 5 months, clean fecal) - what do you think? Worth a try? I emailed the minimealworm guy already.

Thanks!
