Shiny film on water's surface...

ebcornell Nov 21, 2004 11:27 AM

I've been keeping a pair chinese fire-bellied newts in a mainly aquatic set up for over a month now. I'm using a submersible filter and the newts seem to be healthy and active. But recently I've noticed a shiny film, kind of like an oil slick, on the water's surface. It reappears after water changes and I'm looking for an explanation and a remedy.
Thanks much!

Do you have anything breaking the waters surface? like an air stone? I noticed that it does that for me too if i don't make some kind of interuption on the surface of the water

No, I don't. I had heard that newts are stressed by too much noise or current, so I had limited my filtration to the one submersible filter. I had hoped the slight current it created would be enough, but it doesn't look like it's doing the trick.
