Thoughts On New Forum Format...

BrianD May 15, 2003 01:56 PM

I would first like to say that I love this site and wouldn't stop visiting no matter how crappy the format is, but I do have a few suggestions:

1. Why the year at the end of the topics. We all know what year it is. Even in the very confusing Dec/Jan months I'm sure we are all bright enough to figure out that Jan is this year and Dec was last year.

2. Maybe it's my computer, but why is topics centered on the screen? Move them back to the left side please.

3. The Image sign at the end. If your using multiple pics then you don't get the Image box. I think the image box should be available for the person posting to use at his/her discretion.

4. It might be a little easier to read if the main topics were in bold or a different color, but I prefer bold because all these colors are hard to look at.

5. The new boxes at the end of new posts: First off once you read a post it turns to purple so a person should be able to figure out that the ones that are still blue are new to that individual. I don't personally like that little multicolored hard to read new box burning my eye.haha.

6. Those little markers before the posts and reply's do nothing for me. I can tell that the one tabbed in is a reply to the previous post. The filled in circle, empty circle and box once again make it hard to look at.

I could go on and on... I would like to say again that I love this site and I also know nothing of what it takes to make this site or keep up the forums so maybe my thoughts are stupid. Jsut felt like typing. Later BrianD

Yeas, it is centered on everyone's screen.

I need to have the squares, circles, etc., in front of the posts because the forum is too narrow at my resolution and posts often take up 2 or 3 lines.

Yes, it needs a little work, but it's not that bad. I don't see how anyone who is the slightest bit computer-literate can find this very confusing. (No offense intended to those who don't know how to use the expensive machines in front of them).

I personally didn't find it confusing, just hard to read. Now that they have changed they layout, it looks much better and easier on the eyes.

Are the font sizes of the text when reading messages a problem for or others ? We switched out the arial font in favor of the times new roman. Right now the size is set at 2, but I am wondering if that might be too small...perhaps 3 maybe? at least it looks that way to me comparing the look of the text to messages on the old forums.

The techs have been tinkering today and adding new option settings for the admins. I believe the forum index page table widths were altered this afternoon which should help those using higher resolution screens from having things looking centered so much. I honestly cannot see any difference but then I have a tiny monitor and it's not high res.

The old forum didn't take any time to load at all!

This is what I don't like most about it,

At home, I honestly see not one bit of difference in the load time between the old forums and the new ones. I am on AOHell and dial up and rarely get the faster connections. My ability to get pages loaded in regards to the forums is more than adequate as far as I can see...a second or two.

At work, we have ISDN or whatever that type of connection is called for networks and the speed at which web pages are accessed and loaded is accessed is significantly and annoyingly slower than my dial up connections at home!

I know someone on a cable modem who has annoying slow load times compared to my dial up.

I can't seem to see any common threads on why some people have slow access while others do not. At best I suggest you please submit a technical feedback report by using this form:

Feedback Form.

To fill it out, you will be prompted to log in with your username and password.

Try to be as consise and clear in your descriptions of what is happening, what computer you use, browser, etc. to better help the folks reading the feedback reports to understand what you mean.

there is a toggle link on the Boa forum index page where you can 'collapse' or 'expand' the messages on the page to either hide or show the replies under all of the subject headings. Some people find it useful to collapse the view and cut out the cluttering look of the replies when all they want to do is a quick scan of the subject titles on the page. When it is toggled to the collapsed view at the end of the subjects you see how many replies have been made to that message as well as how many of them are new since the last time you logged into the system.

>>5. The new boxes at the end of new posts: First off once you read a post it turns to purple so a person should be able to figure out that the ones that are still blue are new to that individual. I don't personally like that little multicolored hard to read new box burning my eye.haha.

That changing of the link to purple that you see isn't necessarily what other people see. It all depends on what you have your browser's options set for what colors. me...I see bright blue and hot pink. Right now only 2 sites (k.com and cathobbyist) allow an individual person's web browser options to override whatever the default colors are for the site links. The other sites have a forced dark gray/light gray color combo. Some people are a bit color blind (so link colors mean nothing for them to make posts stand out as read/unread) and there were other folks (mainly from the other sites) who wanted an alternative way to make posts show up visibly as being new posts....hence the tag.

>>6. Those little markers before the posts and reply's do nothing for me. I can tell that the one tabbed in is a reply to the previous post. The filled in circle, empty circle and box once again make it hard to look at.

The old forums have the same exact setup with the markered tabs...curious as to why is it only now you find it hard to look at whereas before on the old forums it was not?
