Housing Beardies together

showofhands Nov 21, 2004 12:34 PM

When housing two bearded dragons in the same enclosure, does it matter if one is considerably younger/smaller than the other? I have a female that's maybe 13 inches long from her nose to the tip of her tail, and a male who's about half that size in a separate tank. Would it be okay to put them together?

Thanks

Dragons housed together must be the same size & weight, otherwise domination will occur. Also, only females should be housed together.
Your male and female must not be put together. She is too big for him. There are also issues regarding breeding between then which is a big no given their current ages and sizes.

I know people say that you shouldn't house different sized beardies together but I have seen it done with no problem. Or breeding at young ages.

I'm not trying to start a fight here - but I feel its very irrespsonsible to say its okay to house different sized lizards (especially dragons) together, or to breed at a young age. Just because it has been done, or can be done, does not mean it should be done.

Breeding should not be allowed before 18 months of age - there are reports of higher incidences of males unable to retract hemipenes if they are too young, and females below 18 months or 400g are too small to safely develop the eggs.

As for different sized dragon together, every dragon sees other dragons as comepetition. IF there is too much of a size difference, the smaller dragon will almost certainly suffer from dominance and stress, and the potential for injury (even death) from attacks from the larger dragon.
