Undertank heater for pixie

Jeff03 Nov 21, 2004 01:34 PM

Can anyone recommend an under tank heater? It's starting to get cooler where I live and the one I've been using becomes too hot for the enclosure. Are there any heaters that have a dial to control how warm the pad gets? Any suggestions are welcome. Thanks,
-Jeff-

I may be wrong, but the UTHs I've used all say don't use with water.
I believe it was because the heat buildup where the mat attaches, will crack the glass when it comes in contact with the water.
Do you really need a heat mat? What are the wintertime temps in your room? And I believe a heat lamp will do well...just use a small bulb.
Another idea...glass cages.com sells a heat pad that does'nt get attached. The tank sits on it. I use a couple, and they dont get anywhere as hot as the other brands, only because they dont really have perfect contact with the glass bottom.
And one last idea...Ultratherm UTH, available from the Bean Farm.
I dont believe they get as hot either.

Petsmart has some with a sticky back and come in diffrent sizes. If you get a 5-10 gallon tank with a henged split plastic lid apose to the screen ones and stick the heatpad to the back of the tank instead of the bottom it will be enough to heat the tank up to make it past the winter. I did this for my orante horned frog. If the lid you got has the 2 light bulbs in it switch one to a incodecent blub and it will provide extra heat if needed.

I have 2 adult males, in the winter I use rheostat to keep the temp low, about 68, because the more heat there is(ALONG WITH WATER) they want to come out and eat ..have sex..and eat..and than they take care of the the kids.
I dont know if you know all the facts about these Bull Frogs , but they are cool.
I am no expert but I do not think you should "power feed" these frogs. The males take 8 years to mature, and can also stay underground as long as well. Such a cool frog!!!
