Interested in Chams

mastino177 Nov 21, 2004 03:21 PM

I've a good experiences with beardies and uros, but after seeing chams at the Atlanta Reptile Show I've become more interested in chams. I've always admired their docile nature and curious look, but I want to make sure I know what I'm getting in to. I know that they do not require the heat of my other lizards, but require the uva and uvb. You know the basics...higher humidity, plants/vines to climb on, insects (crickets, worms, silkworms (my beardie loves them), heat in the mid 80's, high amounts of uvb, uva (use MVB's with my others). So what are the best breeds to start with, the most colorful, what should I look for...what caging, heat, etc are neccessary.

From veryhting I have heard, Veilds are most forgiving with husbandry mistakes. Tho panthers are by far the most colorful I have seen ppl have. Veilds are also less expensive to start out with, and seem more abundant in the pet trade. (ok, I have to admit I may be a bit biased here, I have veilds... want a panther down the line, but love my veilds to death).
And I would have to recommend, that despite anything you may read or hear or see, veilds (and many chams in general) like to live solitary lives (it took me quite a while to believe this, but my veilds are much happier with their "own rooms" so to speak)...
Def. keep an eye on the humidity & their shedding... bad things can happen if you miss some shed (tho that's true with any herp)...
Good Luck. Sorry about my rambling...
