Uromastyx questions for a beginner...

domingoakasunday Nov 21, 2004 03:27 PM

I recieved a uromastyx about a month ago as a rescue. I have no previous experiance with uros. I do have quite a bit of experiance with other reptiles however. I Have a question about the shedding of the uro. The previous owner told me he is darker now than he used to be and several days later he began to peel... I have not found any shed pieces in his cage so I am assuming he eats them? he has not finished shedding still... so I am confused as to what I should be doing differently. I have never kept a pure desert creature before so I am used to soaking my animals when they need to shed. what is the best way to help them shed? he is getting quite wrinkled...
thanks for any help.

It's usually not needed to soak a Uromastyx. If you provide a slightly more humid hide box it will ease the shed. www.deerfernfarms.com has photos of hide boxes.

well i soaked helga to help her along, but she was also a rescue and had many many layers that needed to come off and that are still coming off.
it takes uros a long time to peel, so it could be a couple months before everything is done. just make sure the spikes and the toes get all the skin off them.
