Veiled egg-laying question?

tommymx Nov 21, 2004 04:02 PM

I breed a good amount of Veiled and Panther Chameleons, and this is the first time i have had this road-block. I have two Vaeileds that will not lay their eggs. Both of them are verry very large and I can clearly see a lot of eggs protruding through the skin.

For one of the two it is her first time, and she sits on the edge of the bucket all the time, but never enters.

The other is facing her second oviposition, the fisrt time she layed 48 healthy eggs. She also showed all the common aspects of laying; she stopped feeding the day before, dug two test holes, and then the third night she dug her heart out and layed perfectly. This time around she is much larger than her first time and is going on 170 days since her first oviposition. Yet she still feeds readily and shows no interest in her lay-bucket.

I am seeking out information on what other breeders do when confronted with these situations.

Thanks in advance,

Miles Thompson

try putting them in the bucket for a while with no sticks to get out of it and se if it makes them want to practice digging

I had the same prob before
I read somewhere i forget where now that if you put her in the laying bin with a screen ontop so she cant get out she will expell her eggs in a few days with peace and quiet (no peeking)
With my female she laid her eggs in a day with that method

What we usually do in the case of one of our chameleons not laying her eggs when clearly it seems like it is time for her to do so...we will get a small rubbermaid which has more depth than width and preferably is opaque or colored...put a sandy/soil/vermiculite mix in there and pack it down tight so that she can burrow.

Then we put the lid on so she can't get out and has nothing else to think about except egg laying. Usually within a day she'll lay them.

Good luck. Also if they are still eating make sure you dust the crickets with calcium and whatnot....egglaying is hard on them.
