How common are snake stud sevices?

JDalbo Nov 21, 2004 04:52 PM

I have an cbb Albino male who will be up to breeding size this spring. However, my normal female and 100% het albino female will need more time. I was wondering if it is unusual for someone to lend a male to someone who has females up to size. Is this a risky endeavor? I am eager to get another ball morph, but it appears I'll have to wait unless my male studds someone else's female. All I would ask would be for possibly a pastel, a single pick of the hatchlings, or something equivalent.

I personally don't like doing it...but if it happens...normally females go to the males. Mostly just because you probably have more money into the male than someone would and if you have anything else to breed it to you don't have to worry about it being away from you to breed just one snake in another person's collection. Things to worry about could be disease...you don't really know exactly what is in someone elses collection and diseases can be there...which can mess up your animals as well. I'd say if you do it do it with someone you trust....

Right now my male albino is going to breed 2 females that aren't mine....a 50% het and a 66% het because I didn't have any females for him...I also have a few females out on loan, but I'm doing all of this with confidence in the other person whom I know and trust.
Just be careful....

I don't like getting snakes from other people's collections (mites, etc etc) so having one of my adult snakes go and live in the SAME cage as another keeper's? Not likely to happen.

I've done it, but only with other HIGHLY reputable breeders that I completely trust (and live close by).

2 excellent points that i failed to mention,im slippin in my old age

im not saying that it doesnt happen but if I was to do something like that, i would want it to be local, someone i can keep tabs on just in case they skip town or i see my animal not being taken care of properly.I mean we are talking about multi-thousand dollar animals with multi-thousand offspring. id like my investment to be kept close to me ,plus you would have to find someone with an albino female or het albino female of breeding size to get more albino morphs or find someone with a female pastel then half offspring will be pastel 100% het albino and the other half will be normal 100% het albino both worth good money, but remember there are many co-dominant morphs to. id stud my pastel but it would have to be someone close to me i am very weary of who I do business with.I have dealt with 2 people so far Rob Pennisi and Sal @ boca reptiles and i will always do business with them.

Very good points, and thanks for the feedback. Unfortunately, I dont know anyone (personally) who collects/ breeds snakes, so it looks like I may just have to wait. Or maybe pick up an adult normal as practice for my het breeding. Thanks again.

Snake transmitted diseases. LOL
Where are you located? Actually I did that with a panther chameleon but it did not take. They only mated once and actually it works better if they stay together for a while.
My female never laid eggs from the male. She later laid eggs from a different male but I will give the gentleman a couple of babies anyway when they are born for his trouble. Plus there is a slim chance that some could be his anyway due to sperm retention in chameleons.
He is local and I took the chance because the animal looked healthy. But that is with a $300.00 animal not a $2000.00 dollar animal.
I would insist a vet check before doing that. I would also only do it with a local person. I don't know if you put them together and they mated if it would be enough. Then you could take your male with you but I don't know if that would work.
Say, where are you located? I have a 1900 gram normal female and no males old enough. LOL

I pretty much agree with what everyone here has already said. I have a 2005g female and although I have males that are breeding size as well a member of our local reptile society has a het pied male that is breeding size and is willing to pair him up. Being that A) His snake is worth more B) He has other females that he is breeding with his male and C) He is more experienced than I, my female is going to go stay with him to breed and hopefully lay. My brother also has a pastel male and a het albino male that we were debating on pairing up with my female but I'm a sucker for pieds and the 50% possible het pieds are better for me than even getting a pastel!! LOL.

I would put her with the pastel.

you could sell the pastels and buy 100% hets or maybe a piebald if you hatch several pastels.

50%ers are cool but if thats all you have it could be a long project.
There's nothing wrong with that though.
I hatched some 50% caramels but I have the 100% male to speed up the proving out.
I hope to hatch a caramel(s) this year, that would make things even faster.

All I would get out of breeding my normal to his pastel is one pastel, providing we ended up with more than one out of the clutch. He has the expensive animal, he gets dibs, considering it is a first breeding for both animals we had agreed that I would get a male pastel if we got more than one pastel out of the clutch, all the rest would be his. If we only got one pastel it would be his and we would split the normal sibs, if they all came out normal we would just split them 50/50. I'm planning on buying my own pastel next year and if not I can always pair my brothers up with one of my girls that will be ready to go next year anyway as I'm buyin poss het ghost females and most likely a pair of het pieds next year anyway!!
