ACK !! Bugs in my substrate !!

bseery Nov 21, 2004 05:24 PM

I have a 40 gallon tank that I keep my anoles in. It's set up with "Bed-a-beast" substrate and a waterfall, vines, and leaves for cover.
We seem to always get thousands of tiny tiny little bugs in the substrate. I have cleaned out the tank once, removing all the substrate and using a shop vac to suck as much out as possible, but I KNOW that there was no way I got them all.

We put new bedding in and a few weeks later we again have thousands of little bugs.
I don't see that they are bothering the anoles. The bugs don't seem to climb the glass, and tend to stay in the bedding. I don't want them there at all and I want to know what will KILL the bugs and not hurt the anoles.

Any ideas ??

Try Reptile Relief--it works on mites and will probably work on the bugs you have. It is harmless to Anoles.

Who makes this "Reptile Relief".
I only ask as I never see anything in my local petstore, and will most likely have to order it.

Not sure who the manufacturer is but it is available at most online reptile suppliers and a good many pet stores. It is specifically for mites.

it sounds like you have a mite problem. one of the causes is the leaves youve covered the bottom with.
another problem could be the substrate youve used. try changing to a different kind of substrate, containing less organic material.

before you throw in leaves, it would be a good idea to clean them really well.

the leaves are fake, and we take them out and wash them with very hot water every few weeks (to remove anole poo).
