Is a Granite a genetic morph?

anson Nov 21, 2004 05:37 PM

Also how are granites linked to Ebony Ball Pythons?
I asked the question once before but got a vague answer.
Is the jury not out on this one yet.
The ones I have seen seem to have certain similar characteristics so that makes me think granites are a genetic morph, or at least some of them.
I have a pair so hopefully I will find out one day if they are or are not a morph if I don't get a clear answer on the forum.
Also I don't see many of them available for sale.
Are they just not very popular?
I think they are nice looking snakes.

Yellowbelly X Granite has produced the "Ebony" Ball.

I tried proving this guy out, but didn't have as much luck as I hoped.
Here he is with a couple offspring that look a bit like him. I'm guessing that there are multiple genes involved, but I'm hanging on to the first baby and breeding her back to him in 2-3 years.

If she was not then maybe her genes are dominant and you will only get strong results when breeding him to his female offspring.
If she was then there are probably multiple genes involved or it's not not genetic at all.
The fact that some look just a bit like him is interesting.
I wonder if they are visible hets like pastels and he is the equivalent of a super pastel or like a super granite?
Just a guesstimate.
Is the granite x yellow belly cross proven. I have seen yellow bellies going for unreal amounts. It sounds pretty risky to me.

Yes, Yellow belly(proven line) X Granite(proven line) has produced ebony balls. The other Yellow bellies and Granites may prove out but we will just have to breed and see. I am working with several granite and yellow bellies combos this and next year. I will post my results went I get them. Thanks david

More of the babies look like her than like him. I guess I'll see what happens when I cross him back to that first one.
