Want to get into habitat design...

lovelyleopards Nov 21, 2004 06:45 PM

I'd like to learn to build cages/habitats for my reptiles, but I'm just not sure where to start. I'l be moving next month and will finally have room to work on such a project. Can anyone point me to some good beginner info on how to build a simple reptile cage? The species I currently keep are listed below - which one should I aim to build a cgae for? Thanks for any help...

Inhabitants of the reptile room:
Leopard geckos, pictus geckos, crested geckos, african fat-tails, Paroedura bastardi bastardi, a velvet gecko, Henkel's Leaf Tails, Bibron's geckos, Corn snakes, Ball Pythons, Honduran milks, a single Taiwan Beauty, Leucistic Texas Rats, Solomon Island Tree Boas, a pair of Mali Uromastyx, an Amazon tree boa, baby Hatian tree boas, a single female circleback Colombian red-tail...

Without knowing what your setups currently are, I'd guess the Uroplatus henkeli would most benefit from a custom habitat. But I'm partial to U. henkeli - it's my favorite lizard by far.

I'll post a picture of a large terrarium I built for a friend of mine who breeds U. henkeli. This was built using VERY simple construction techniques. All cuts were cross cuts, no dados or rabbet joints were used, and it was assembled with glue and screws. The interior was sealed with an easy to use epoxy which still looks as good as the day we applied it.

But honestly, you're not looking to build a partially flooded terrarium for any of those species so I'd figure out which species needs a better habitat or possibly are currently in cages that are hard to access, etc. We can help you build a simple cage for any of those.
