Rescued Corn and not sure of morph

diate Nov 21, 2004 08:30 PM

Hi,
I rescued an adult corn about 2 weeks ago. He is quite healthy and active. He started life as a classroom pet in a middle school and then was adopted by one of the students. When that student went to college, his parents called the museum I worked at to find a new home. They told us that Carter, the new snake, is a Creamsicle corn. I am not sure if that is the case. Anybody agree or have a different opinion?

Brett

creamsicles are actually a cross between emoryis rat snakes and amel corns....

Nice looking corn...Paul

Since creamsicle people would not be upset if you introduce a non-hybrid amel corn in their "mix," but many corn breeders would be very upset by mixing creamsicle in theirs, and since you have been told by the people closest to the original owner that it was a creamsicle...

I would stick with that and call that snake a creamsicle. To do otherwise is a little irresponsible, in my opinion, if you have any designs of breeding this animal or letting it go to someone else for any reason.

Just my opinion, of course, but you cannot tell whether that animal has any emoryii blood in it simply by looking at it. All you can deal with are the probabilities involved.

>I agree with Darin.
There is no way to tell by looking.
There would be no benefit to them saying it is a creamsicle if it isn't so I would take them at their word and consider it a creamsicle.
This is an amelanistic corn snake/great plains rat snake mix.
(guttata/emoryi mix)
This is important.
There are many people who wopuld be very very upset to find out their "pure" corn had great plains rat snake blood in it.
If you ever breed this snake make sure that all offspring are labled as having great plains (Emoryi) blood in them.

Corn snakes and rat snakes..No one can have just one.

My experience running a reptile rescue is that parents who are unloading a snake because their kid left the house and didn't take it with him, are generally nice parents/nice people, but don't know a whole lot about the snake their kid left behind. It may indeed be a creamcicle, but it looks a lot like an amel to me (and as common as amels are, statistically there's a higher chance it's an amel).

Even if the parents repeated the right information, a lot of people who give up a snake in the first couple years of ownership are going on one or two pieces of false info anyway. so just because the pet store or someone they knew who also had snakes back in the 80s etc told them it was a creamcicle doesn't mean it is one. I vote Amel, but it's hard to know for sure.
