Handling- how much is too much?

showofhands Nov 21, 2004 10:21 PM

I've got a yearling buttercream (I think that's what it's called--looks just like the one at the top of the page), and although I want the beauty to be docile and accustomed to me I don't want to stress it out. How much handling is too much? Does it depend on the individual snake's personality?

All snakes are different. Some tolerate handling better than others. There are some signs of stress you can watch for.
Regurging, going off feed, striking are some of them.I wait at least 24 hours after feeding to handle my snakes. Most of the time.lol.
Also dont handle when there going into there shed cycle. That will stress them out...Paul

It depends a lot on the individual snake's temperament. I have some snakes that are completely unperturbed by human contact and will contentedly sit on my shoulder for hours on end. I have another, a male hypo motley, that barely tolerates any handling. He bites without provocation, musks, tries to escape and generally does everything he can to make it clear he does not want human contact.

depends on your snake. i have a couple that just love being held...i guess they just enjoy getting out of the tank (but hey i would too! lol). my blue beauty is a [bleep]. i would say just handle them, see how they take it...when they start getting ansty put em back in the tank.

I handle most of my snakes at least once a day, exceptions being when they're gettin ready to shed and after eating. None of my snakes seem to be the least bit stressed out from handling. Sometimes my king is out for a couple hours being passed around, and she is usually cool with it.
