Giant Marine Toads 7" and 8-3/4"

tdk Nov 22, 2004 07:42 AM

I just bought 2 of these from different sources. Both claimed they were eating, one hasn't eaten since I got him 2 weeks ago and the other eats all that is put in front of it. The one that doesn't--I've tried crickets, earth worms, night crawlers, mice (pinkies and fuzzies), super worms, grasshoppers, goldfish and 2 kinds of large roaches and nothing has worked. Has anyone got any suggestions. I keep both in my snake room with room temp. around 76 degrees with heat tape for a warm area around 81 degrees. The second one, that eats, I've found I can get it to eat frozen/thawed if I take a petri dish and put a night crawler or roach inside with a top on it and sit the mouse on top. The toad sees the movement underneath and eventually strikes and takes the mouse. Saves me from buying live mice.

The one thats not eating might be following its natural insticts to hibernate, especially if it was wild caught.

But there could be another problem too.
Check ur temps, humidity, and evrything else to make sure ur toads are in a clean, comfortable, stress-free environment.
If ur toads r in the same tank, u may want to separate them (unless its a breeding pair).
I've found with my herps sumtimes that have eating disorders that ther just too stressed, so i have to change things to make them less stressed.

The large ones I have eat only at night. My largest took a week or so to eat when I first got her. During the day she is pretty shy.... The smaller ones are less shy.

As long as your toad is not losing weight I wouldn't worry to much yet. Remember she has been through alot to get to you..... Most likely wild caught, she could be really freaked out right now. Ask whom you bought her from, if she was given dog food as a diet.... Maybe you need to break her from this bad habit....
