Need to fill a few tanks.

bigwizzkid Nov 22, 2004 10:37 AM

My friend was at a yard sale the other day, and picked up two 10's and a 20 gallon for 30 bucks. And then he gave them to me. Well, im one of those people that can't stand having empty cages lieing around. Ive ben trying to think of what I could get for them. I was thinking a rosey/sand/rubber, or ball python for thw 20. But i can't really think of anything that would fair well in a 10. Any sugjestions.

The beauty of having 10 gallon tanks around is that they are so good for housing young snakes until they grow to need something larger. So, you buy larger enclosures, and voila, there's those empty 10 gallons staring you in the face, just begging for more baby snake to live in them and grow to need. . . at least this seems to be the case in my life (LOL).

And just think, you already have the "larger" on hand, although if I had a 20 gal. hanging out I'd be tempted to fill it with an adult children's python. Come to think of it, juvenile childreni can live quite comfortably in a 10 gallon for a good while. Decisions, decisions. . .best of luck with yours!

As a fellow herper, I too tend to suffer from ETS from time to time.
As a high school sicence teacher, I gather empty 10 gallon tanks all the time. I typically put a garter snake or frog or whatever in them for the kids to study for a few days.

As its winter, the empty tanks sit there and just glare at me. Its terrible.

My sympathies my friend. Good luck in your searches.

By the way, does it have to be a snake? There's plenty of other herps out there you could get that would fit fine in a 10.

No it dosen't have to be a snake. I will most likely fill at least one of them with a snake though.Really have no idea what else I will get. Im currently Collecting singles of many different species, for a very large breeding operation I wan't to start next year. And the thought of breeding a few lizards has crossed my mind. Who knows. As for now, ive wrapped all 3 cages in newspapper, and put them in the far far far back of my garage. Then started cluttering the area in front of them. Now I can't seem them, and im to bsuy to unclean the clutter to remove the papper. It keeps me sane

A man who knows a solution! Hiding the tanks eh? While I hate to do it, I might just try that.

you could try a taiwain beauty, ive had one for about a year and its still in a 10 gal tank even though its 2 1/2 ft long.. it spends a lot of its time hiding in a small vase and the rest in the branchs in its tank.
very slim snake but lovely markings

have fun deciding

For the 10's...well, some scorpions might work for one. and for the 2nd...um...maybe look into a viper boa. they're pretty small and quite interesting

bigwizzkid Nov 24, 2004 11:15 AM

I gotta say, im not fond of scorpians, or spiders. Both in the arachnid family aren't they? If yes, then my reason is spiders freak me out. if not, then spiders and scorpians freak me out lol. My friend had a scorpian, and he said it was really friendly, AND IT STUNG ME! havn't liked them sence. Im really trying to keep it to herps. Allthough Im really looking in to getting a few garters and caging them together in the 20, and setting up a frog cage in the 10. Maybe a few whites tree frogs. I'd love to get a few bright crimson/fire garter's.

Don't forget about ring neck snakes. Those are often forgotten gems of the herp world. Also Shovel nose snakes are fun and not to common. They are awsome little bug munchers so it gives any collection some variety. You can get those on Glade herp from time to time. Occasionally I carry them as well since they are super easy to care for.
