BPs first shed (since I got her)

ngiovas Jul 01, 2003 07:43 AM

My BP is shedding for the first time since I got her a month ago. She is about 17 inches long and has been eating F/T mice once a week.

Everything I have read indicates that she should shed most of her skin in one piece, but my snake has been shedding little bits and pieces for about a week now. Is this ok?

The humidity in the tank is around 62%. The temp on the warm side is around 87 during the day and 80 on the cool side. She has a large water dish which I have seen her drink from many times.

Is there anything I can do to improve her sheds? It looks like she still hasn't finished. How long should the whole process take?

Thanks,
Nick

My python, Abigail, has a humid hide when we notice her going into blue. We create one by putting a small dish with water & moss into one of her hides, usually her cool “cave”. We do have to persuade her to get into it, since she seems to spend most of the day lounging in her warm cave. Therefore, we remove the warm hide, and put it back after she gets into her humid hide. I don’t know if she’s figured out the humidity thing, or if we’ll have to keep persuading her each time, but the last two sheds have been complete, nice & neat, after she get in.

BTW - Her first shed was miserable, and took forever, all pieces. Humid hides ROCK!

Good luck!

Ahhh theres nothing like the time where your BP sheds for the first time...... Humidity sounds just fine... What I usually do is keep an eye out for the first sign of shed (eyes clouding over) then I would mist that BP 2-4 times a day til he/she is done shedding and it works everytime... Perfect shed everytime... and it helps when the substrate is moist..... Otherwise you're doing just great!
