Incubation Question

bast Nov 22, 2004 10:59 AM

First I'd like to thank everyone for the help they have given me so far. I really apprecieate it.

My female laid her first ever clutch of 25 eggs on Nov. 19. Some have already sunken in...some just a bit other a lot. Are these fertile?
When is it worth candling them? How long before any evidence of growth and fertility is visible? I'd like to discard infertile eggs soon so they do not pollute the incubator with fungus.

Thank you again,

Brian

You can candle them at 3-4 days and see veins in fertile eggs. I would say if they have sunken in they are moire than likely infertile...... A viable egg willl be firm..... infertile ones that end up molding or collapsing will be more spongy feeling to the touch.... Tomorrow you should eb able to candel them and see... Make sure you look at the collapsed and uncollapsed to get an idea of the veins.....if there are any.....
Good Luck!!!

Most(but not all) infertile eggs have a yellowish tint from the start. Another cause for them to be sunken is too little hydration in your medium. Did you add the proper ratio of vermiculite/perlite to water? Eggs will dimple if kept too dry.
I hope this helps. And good luck with your clutch.
