Its a male right? (image)

ciliatus Nov 22, 2004 11:16 AM

hello there,

3 months ago at a show i bought this little guy

the seller wasnt the breeder, so the infos he gave me where bs...
for example the gecko was labeled as red giant gecko, final size 20". LOL
he told me the animal was 6 months old, but i guess it was 2-3 months old.
anyways i thought it had nice colors and it looked quite like a female.
but now 3 months later, im pretty sure its a boy. what do you think?

I am no expert but it looks more female to me. Though there is a bulge, I don't see any of the formeral pours. Also, 3 months is not quite old enough to accurately sex crested geckos.

yea i agree, it is a bit young to sex. most crested geckos take at least 5 and some times as much as 10 months to become fully sexable. I would give it a bit longer.

I notice a small bulge but I am still not confident that its a male, give it some time.

hi there, thank you for your opinions, but you misunderstood me, the gecko was bought 3 months ago, when it was about 3 months old. so it is about 6 months old now.

bye

a better picture more of the tail region would be most helpful. but like others said, a month or two will definately tell you the answer.

did you scroll down a little? there is a 2nd picture.

would be great if it turned out female, but i highly doubt that.

best regards

guess i didn't scroll down at all.
from the picture on the far right on the bottom it looks like a male to me. but sometimes when they're not fully developed it's hard to tell when the tail is moved around because it' can make it " bulge" a little bit. just hold out for another month and you'll know for sure.

It looks like a female to me. Females have small buldges. If it was housed on it's own its entire life I would say it's not a male. But, there still is a chance that it is male. I would bet on female though. It also appears to be quite robust and I find that females tend to be a lot thicker then males right before the back legs.

In that first pic, I'm pretty sure that can see rows where the pores will show up. Everyone seems to be focused too close to the cloaca. Look more toward the under side of the gecko's left thigh and you'll see some larger scales.

At six months, I'm guessing the gecko to be 15-20 grams or so, so the bulge really won't tell you anything yet.

All in all, from the pics posted, I'd say it's still a crapshoot.

Thanks Mike and Anthony for your opinions. I tend to see it like Anthony, i also see a glimps of pores on the left picture.
Even though it is think around the waist as Mike said.

Well thank you all, i will tell you in a few months.

Ingo

ps: it was housed alone all the time
