f/t from live feeders?

liquidelusion Nov 22, 2004 03:07 PM

i am going to be getting a 3 foot california kingsnake. im new to snakes, but know the basics from reading several care sheets. the guy who owns the snake now cannot afford to keep it. the problem is that the snake is only feeding on live medium rats. how difficult is it to switch to f/t rats? what techniques should i use? sorry if this has been asked a million times before.

Well, my first suggestion is, if it's 3' and feeding on medium rats, put it on a diet. lol. I hope you meant medium mice. Most kingsnakes have a great feeding response to begin with, so I'm sure you won't have any problems getting it to take to the f/t mice. Just get one and try it out before you take a plunge into buying bulk frozen mice. Good luck. I'm sure it will do fine.

I got my first king snake today, an Eastern King. Mostly I keep American Rat Snakes. What I have found useful to get a stubborn Rat Snake to feed on F/T mice is to scent the mouse with Mouse Marker from T-Rex and then use long forceps to wave the mouse in front of him. With some snakes, they like to be in their hide when they feed. Try it. It might just work for you.
