Veiled eggs taking long to hatch!

Anthonyd Nov 22, 2004 03:13 PM

My veiled eggs have been incubating for almost 7 months now and still do not look like they are ready to hatch. Every where I look says the uncubation is between 150-200 days. I'm at 225 days. They are fertile, I just don't know why they arent hatching. The temperature fluctuates between 73-76 degrees and they are in complete darkness and are half buried in moist vermiculite. this isn't my first clutch , so I that that I have a pretty good idea of what I am doing. My last clutch took about 6 1/2 months to hatch. Can any one help me out?

Although many things can be a factor in the length of incubation, I have had veileds hatch out at 7 and even 8 months and they were just fine. They were at even warmer temperatures than you mentioned-about 80F. They can certainly take even longer and someone I know recently had a clutch hatch out at 9 months. There are of course people who hatch them out with an average of 6 months or just a little more, as you have experienced. Maybe someone else will have more to add to this, but I would not be worried at this point.

Depending on the health/diet/size of the female at the time, the embryos may or may not have been calcified (put into their shells) at optimum size.

No need to worry yet, holler back again when it his 9 months...then it's something wrong with the temps or the female initially, or just really unlucky!

Best of luck with the eggs!
