Bairds rat snakes

jrquinn Jul 01, 2003 08:19 AM

I am looking for a female Bairds. I was on 277 with a friend (read: Alterna-lover) and saw 1.1 DOR. Does anyone know of an area that has more common rats? Alterna are neat, but I want to see some Bairds!!!

They are probably as common on 277 as anywhere else. You saw a DOR pair in one night and you want somewhere that they are more common?
Of course, there are many other roads that aren't as busy as 277 so if you find one there, it is more likely to be alive (Juno, Pandale, etc).

Some of the areas east of Val Verde county have bairdi less traffic and no alterna hunters, but I wouldn't say they are any more common. Some people say they are easier to find (and uglier, IMHO) in the Davis Mts, but that hasn't been my experience.

I have heard a credible report of someone seeing 9 in one night on FM 674 near the W Nueces river.

I agree with Chris - a pair in a night is pretty good.

I've had good luck too, if you call it that, in finding DOR neonates in the Davis Mts. later in the summer (August/September).

I also agree - they are really neat snakes!

Two in a night is good, but I want to see them moving! The ones from the Davis Mt's are supposed to be common, but I don't like them as much as the more eastern type.

Either way, I'm just glad that they are finally getting the notice they deserve!

true, I do love alterna and hunting for them but, you know that I enjoy finding Bairdi as much as you do!!!
