Handling your Balls?

MistaMasta Nov 22, 2004 06:44 PM

Sorry, couldn't restrain myself from the title. I was wondering when the best time to handle them is. They haven't come out of their hides since I've had them. I take the smaller one out, but I was nervous about the big one b/c it still hadn't shed over it's eyes yet but I soaked it and used tape (gently) to get that off today. I felt bad for it b/c it couldn't hunt the mouse I fed it this weekend, I had to injure the mouse and dangle it in front of the snakes mouth. It also kept bumping into things. I'd really like to give that guy that had them a piece of my mind for not having anything in there to help it shed. You can still see a little skin on his nose but I'm sure he's just happy to be able to see now.

This one is Michael, he's easily longer than his 4ft enclosure, the temporary setup is still a mess......

...dirty title,i hadda read it.lol

A buddy of mine just started using the same substrate for his rats last week(looks the same anyway).
He praised its ability to absorb odors.Apparently it dries everything out so well that it kills all smells.
Very efficient odor control yes,but not so good for the humidity requirements needed for ball pythons. So we dimissed it as a possible new substrate for our snakes.

All of this is an assumption on my part.Just food for thought.
However, keep this in mind if they continue to have shedding issues.

Good Luck

I incapacitate all live rodents before putting them in tanks unless they don't have their eyes open, as I have an adopted male with scars and no tip of the tail from the person just chucking live rats in the cage and then walking off. My personal preference is f/t, with pk second. Just my two cents and I know there are folks out there who have fed live for years without ever having an incident. I just don't want to take a chance, especially with a couple snakes who will not eat in front of me. Something to think about, nothing more.

I just acquired a nice CB female but you would never know that. Why because the owner fed it live rats.
The poor thing has a left eye that is recessed and over lapped coria from a rat bite in the eye, and several areas where the scales are deformed and not growing back regularly from bites. Reason I will Never feed a live ran to ANY of my snakes!
