newbie on breeding has some questions...

fcwegnm0 Jul 01, 2003 09:24 AM

how will i know when my leo can breed? when she lays one or two unfertile eggs?... when that happens.. is it good to breed her then.. or should i wait a while? im trying to do what would be the most healthy way to go about it... just because she CAN breed doesnt mean it wont stunt her growth, etc... am i right about all that? so im wondering when i can safely try to breed? right now shes a little over 8 inches long and an even 50 grams... thanks for listening to my ramblings... dave

I wait until my females are over 50 grams to start breeding... once they reach 50 grams introduce them to a male and you will probably start getting eggs in 2-4 weeks, easy as that. If they do not successfully copulate the first time, reintroduce them in a few days.

Just make sure she has a bowl of calcium available.

... ive read that they lay an egg or two once they are mature... did i get bad info?

another thing... for being 50 grams she looks a lot smaller than the other adult female leos ive seen... most of the weight is in her tail; its huge... should i wait until she stops growing?

just more ramblings.... dave

A lot of reptile breeding is based on "feel", definately not an exact science.

If you feel she needs to gain a bit of body mass before breeding her, then give her more time and let her bulk up.

As far as waiting for infertile eggs before breeding goes, some females will lay infertile eggs if not exposed to a male, but others never will. So I would not use this as some kind of maturity marker.

A female leo is ready to breed when she is (in my opinion) over a year old and well over 40 grams (over 50 would be even better). And of course is perfectly healthy. This would be the ideal condition for a breeding female.
