UVB in a mesh cage

ChaoticCoyote Nov 23, 2004 06:36 AM

I've just finished a 4x2x4 cage for my juvenile iguana. I'm using a 1/2" mesh on the outside, so he's open to the air.

My wife is concerned about UV shining out of the enclosure; in the past, all of our reptiles have been behind glas, so UV escapage wasn't a problem.

So far as I know, a 5% UVB bulb shouldn't have any affect on people, but I figured someone here might have a more definitive answer

well you have nothing to worry about...the uvb dissipates 10-12 inches from the bulb, unless you get one of those new ones from Big Apple Herp which i would highly reccomend. This will emit the UVB up to 3 feet from the source of the bulb. But still, you dont really have any need to worry about this, unless you let the light shine on you for hours and hours at a time, and then the only thing that you would get would be a mild sunburn. UVB is also known as SUV, or Sunburn UV. But as I said, at such a low intensity it would take quite a while to get a burn from it.

Only thing is if you have this cage say next to your lazy boy recliner and have it so the light is shining on your legs, and you lay there every night from 6-10pm 7 nights a week, after 10-15 years you may develop some melanoma...but just from the refraction of the light, i would say you have nothing to worry about. If all else fails, take some 1/8" acrylic (lexan or crystalite) and line the inside of the cage with it.

I didn't think there was much to worry about; I probably got more UVB from building the cage outdoors than I will from the UVB bulb in ten years.
