can a first attempt at breeding only lead to courting and not actual locking up/copulation

i think my snake was courting last night when i went into the room there tails were alligned together and he was laying on top of her i didnt know this was gonna happen so i dunno if i disturbed them or not is it possible they were courting and just didnt lock up male is a virgin and i THINK the female is to but shes big and wild caught

One thing is for certain - ball pythons don't use 'the missionary position'! So if the male was lying on top of the female, it's odds on that they were not mating! Alternatively, the male could have been 'spurring' the female trying to get her to respond, or - they were just in that position by chance,when you entered the room. Eric

I've had serveral males stay on top of the female while mating.
