reptile relief

davet305 Nov 23, 2004 09:08 AM

on saturday i treated two of my ATBs for mites with reptile relief. i soaked them in a plastic shoebox with 3 cups of water and 1/8 cup of reptile relief. After about 20 minutes I saw my halloween gaping and thrashing. I removed her and rinsed her off. She gaped and looked as if she waas trying to regurgitate for a while. She also had a lot of mucus in her mouth. If flipped on her back she did not roll over. At times she tried to bite me but missed and bit herself. The only portion of her body that she seemed to have control of was her prehensile tail.

I put her in a rack at 88 degrees over night and hoped for the best. The next morning she was coiled up and irritated. She made a few half hearted attempts to bite me. As of today (tuesday) I have observed some problems that have persisted since sunday morning. She seemes to have lost some fine motor control. She strikes and misses, falling off of the limbs in the enclosure. She can't even hit my hand at 12 inches. Most of the time the forked portion of her tongue hangs out of her mouth. And her tongue does not flicker normally, but slowly. She also doesn't have the same snappy attitude and can be handled and examined freely. When she moves through the limbs her head sways and bobs and her tail seems to hang rather than grasping as she usually does.

The other ATB was fine. No problems. Anyone have reactions like this? If so, will she come around? She wants to eat, but can't hit the mouse. Thanx for any feedback.

Yikes, that's really scary. I hope the poor girl comes around. I'm a novice and have never heard of anything like that happening. My only suggestions are to offer her a f/t or prekilled mouse warmed to live mousey temperature on tongs very close to her, maybe scented vividly however her species prefers. Assuming you can afford it, bring her to the best reptile vet in your region. If/when you bring her to the vet, bring the relief stuff with you so the vet can see what's in it. Even if a cure's impossible, the vet can give you some idea of what you're up against. If it's meant to kill mites it's a poison and if she ingested some, that's trouble, though I'm glad she has improved some. Even if some damage is permenant, if you can get her physically comfortable and feeding, that's the two best criteria for a pets quality of life. I wish you and her the best of luck.

This might seem to obvious but read the bottle. Regarding that last post Reptile Relief is totally ingestible and not harmful to the animal. HOWEVER, if the ATB's had poor venilation while exposed to the Reptile Relief, the fumes do a lot of damage. I wouldn't worry about ingestion, but the fumes are a concern with that product. In the future, ease up the dossage a lot. Just a thought.

Why would you soak them in this stuff? It is a direct spray on wipe off sort of thing. I had a couple of Ball Pyhton rescues that were head to toe in mites, and before they came into the house they were sprayed with this rinsed wht water and voila no more mites. one treatment.

True it works best when sprayed. However this stuff sucks when it comes to treating ticks.
