... to ask about incubators. im seriously thinking about breeding my gecko (of course it will be geckos when i get around to breeding) and eventually my ball python... but i dont have too much money. all the "reptile" incubators ive seen go for hunrdeds of dollars, and hova-bators are around 80 or 90.... this is too much for me... a while ago i read a post where this guy put some heat tape in an old fridge and made an incubator that way... would this idea work? with a thermostat/rheostat it wouldnt be hard to regulate the temperature... and with all the insulation in a fridge i think the temp would stay pretty constant... has anyone tried this? it would be MUCH cheaper... i could pick up an old fridge at a yard sale for maybe $5 or $10 then some heat tape or a UTH for about $20.... much cheaper... id just have to put the time into making it, which is no problem... any thoughts on these ramblings? dave

I got my Hovabator at LLLReptile for less than $50 and that was with shipping... though, the heating devices are somewhat questionable...Mine hatched out eggs fine this year.. As to the fridge question, not really sure. I know its been done but now how.

I am in the middle of this decision too. I got a little giant incubator and am not happy with it. It is NOT a wafer thermostat and the solid state is not doing the job. I am giving it at least partial blame for the loss of 14 Children's python eggs. It is also why my Ball Python is coiled around her four.

With gecko and colubrid eggs I just set them up above my savannah monitor enclosure in my 'Chamber of Secrets' and they are fine at 80-84 there. Since the pythons want closer to 90 I went with the incubator. Now I wish I hadn't.

I do have a friend with a hovabator and he likes it. His has a wafer thermostat and the settings are good. (it is also full of eggs for him so I can't even borrow it!) And he did as was already mentioned and got it for less than $50
If you want to make one think about the thermostat, heating element (tape or fish water heater or light bulbs) and the structure it is all going into.
