beardies sleeping. Why??

gavinclews Nov 23, 2004 01:34 PM

Just lately my beardies have been hiding alot. The temps are all the same and i am doing nothing that i dont usually do but its starting to worry me a little.I went to work yesterday and when i got back my big male was in the same place as he was when i went. Is this normal behavior or is something wrong?? I have a couple of hiding spots for them to go in if they want to shade but if i get them out ond place them in the middle of the tank, wothin ten minutes they have made there way back and are sleeping again. what do you think??

how old are they? i dont know much but from what i have read on the forum, it sounds like they might be brumating/hibernating. search those words on this board and you will see what its all about...i know you take their food amount down and time of lights down, but i dont want to misinform...but it doesnt sound like anything is wrong...:D

if they're over a year old, i agree that they are hibernating/brumating. they like little dark spots to rest in and will just sleep there.

from what i read (someone please inform me if i'm wrong), that you should reduce the amount of food that you give them and just keep adding fresh water in case they wake up and decide to have a drink. also, the amount of time the lights are on should be reduced.

I don't know how they can tell buy my beardie always sleeps more during the fall and winter. Its probably the shortness of day that triggers it. But last year my male didn't come out of his hide for almost a month. Don't worry too much, he's just burmating. Just enjoy it, you don't have to worry about feeding him till he decideds to wake up.
