Feeder fish too big for RES to catch?

kksmyname Nov 23, 2004 01:41 PM

I have an adult (2-3 yo) RES that I have been giving very small feeder fish. He was eating one every few days, then he gorged himself and ate like 4 in one day. When I went to get more the place I was at only had bigger ones. I saw him try to catch one the first day, but he was unsuccessful. It has been about a week, and no fish have been caught. He still eats the reptile sticks we give him, but we cut down on that amount so he'd be hungry enough to try to catch a fish. I know he'll eat dead fish, as there was one small one that was dead on arrival and he ate it up, no catching involved. But I am loath to kill even a feeder fish. Any suggestions?

Karen

Is that normal? Should I wash it off?

Hi

If you put your turtle and fish in a smaller container with shallower water, then I think your turtle will have a better chance to catch the fish.

About 2 months ago I put 12 goldfish in my turtle tank. So far she has caught about 5. It takes her a long time to catch one, but she enjoys it.

I do feed the fish as well, so they have a fighting chance!
