Feeding day for my community. pix

dfr Nov 23, 2004 01:42 PM

` I fed my community last night. I got a few pix of their feeding responses.

` After several hours of smelling the food thawing, they come right out when the door is opened.

`
` Especially himself, the old Ball. He's the only one with a strong feeding response. Look at him, ready to strike. Two or three pounds of attitude, about food only.

`
` He's usually first. Give him a couple of rats, put him in a tub, or just leave him on the carpet, he's happy.

`
` Then, it's the big guy's turn. He often grabs the first one. Then, he want's to be fed and have them pushed down his throat for him. He is lazy.

`

`

`

`
` He'll let you push it in for him, if you want to. I've caught my finger on his teeth a few times. Never a problem, SO FAR.

`
` Sometimes, he likes to sit and think it over.

`
` That was a 1 1/2 pounder, whew. Got to re arrange ligaments and such.

`

` He's had over six pounds of food, but until the door is closed, he'll hang around, just in case someone doesn't finish theirs.

`
` I hope all of you, and yours, have a great Thanksgiving!

` Rich Z.

You dont actually keep them all in the same cage do you? If you do that is kind of dumb in my opinion, because if you want that many snakes than you need to be able to afford a cage for each one of the appropriate size.

You could have just asked the question without calling someone "dumb" before knowing all the facts, but I am curious as to the caging arrangements on these myself. The pyrex casserole ensemble there is a bit intriguing...

` Not Pyrex, Cambro plastic food storage from restaurant supply house. I love them, food grade plastic, -40 to 210 F. temperature range, in case I want to make Anaconda, Boa and Python casserole, then freeze it. Also, make great soaking containers, they make them really large, too. Not cheap, though.
` Only those five, of my snakes, live together. They have the health, background and temperament to make it practical. They all also like 70 to 85 degrees F. and 70 to 85% humidity. 3 male Yellow Anacondas, 1 male Boa c. emperator, and 1 Ball Python. Almost six years, now. They have never figured out that the general dogma says that they can't live together.

Thats cool, whatever works. They look healthy to me. I have kept several species together myself with no bad results whatsoever. But in general its best not to set a bad example for others...some people are not as intuitive as to the needs of reptiles as others. Like the time I posted a pic of myself holding my coral snake.
