My Semi Adult Jackson Doesn't Change Color

tassadar898 Nov 23, 2004 05:18 PM

It is good to know that he is green and not changing into vibrant colors because he is angry, but also dissapointing. Is there a reason he is not changing color besides his mood, perhaps he is sick? He does change a bit darker when under the basking light and he seems healthy. But even when I handle him he is just green with spots of brown. Any help?

I believe you've had the misconception that all chameleons change colors to match their surroundings. Not true.
Panther Chameleons are the ones that get the reds & purples. While veiled chameleons take on forest colors of greens, browns, oranges, some yellows & blues. Jackson Chameleons usually only have greens & browns. All can get almost a dark brown/black shade from stress.
Sorry, but you're not going to see much else from your jackson.

But i've seen jackson's when handled turn different brighter colors.

This is a picture of a Dwarf jackson so maybe it is different because it is dwarf but they should have the same color scheme.

Drawf jacksons have a tottaly different color scheme as compared to jacksons xantholophus.Thats the main reason i love the merus so much.

You won't see your cham's full color range until maturity, but even then jackson's have a specific color range they will turn. A calm jax is bright medium green, and one in great health will even have a slight metallic sheen to the skin. A stressed one will be almost black with lighter diamond shapes along the side. A cold one will be generally dark greenish brown. A hot one will be pale greenish yellow. You won't see other colors than these. But, to make up for a narrower palette of color you have those wonderful horns and nice personality! I hope this doesn't mean you are disappointed in your cham. He will be very beautiful in his own way the more you get to know him.
