Get large metal pot.
Set pot in sink.
Fill pot with very hot tap water.
Drop frozen mice/rats into pot.
Wait 15 minutes or until all mice/rats have sunk to bottom of pot.
Remove mice/rats.
Wrap mice/rats in paper towels to remove excess moisture.
(Mice/rats will still be a little damp. No worries.)
Feed mice/rats to hungry snakies.
See? Easy. =)

This normally works good, you just have to watch for that occasional stomach rupture.... Not very pretty.... Maybe my water heater is set too high but I have had it happen a number of times.

your water heater is fine.
Just thaw them gradually in warm to very warm water. No need to actually cook them (that is what you are doing if you thaw them in 140F-160F water).

I use a human heating pad. I let the rats/mice defrost in a towel the night before and then I set the heating pad on low. The rodents are usually given to my snakes at a temp of 92-95, it takes 15-30 minutes depending on the size. I have defrosted my snake food with warm water in the past, but many snakes are not interested in eating wet rodents. I prefer a heating pad by far.
I just use one of those "Miracle thaw" plates my mom gave me years ago for a christmas gift. Hey, it's finally being used on a regular basis! LOL
