Does this sound like a good price?

SKYFIRE_1 Nov 23, 2004 06:47 PM

I know the cost for snakes must be different around the States, but does this sound like it's kind of high? I live in New York and I saw this Four Month Female Motley Ghost, Het for Stripe Corn snake for $75.00. Does that seem reasonable?

Don Soderberg sells them for $65, so that's not a bad price for one, especially if you consider that if you were to buy one from Don and have it shipped to you it would actually cost $104.

I'm not sure I want popular opinion on my side -- I've noticed those with the most opinions often have the fewest facts.

I'm just saying that if you can get a nice one locally for less money then go for it.

3 of mine are from Don and I love them. I just hate to pay for shipping, so if I can get around it, I will.

This all goes back to.."you get what you pay for." I recently purchased a few corns from Don S. and they are knock-outs! All feeding with info from Don about where and who the parents are. Excellent service btw. Actually, prices were decent and shipping wasn''t much. However, the local dealer had some of what I wanted, prices were comparable, obviously didn't have to pay shipping and I could see what I was buying before I bought them. The difference between the two is that with the local dealer, he tends to be not up to speed with genetics or where he gets his merchandise. Don has the grip with genetics and who the animals came from. Also with a generic dealer, he shop has so many different species coming and going at one time that I believe there is risk of unknowningly getting an animal that could possibly have a health problem since he doesn't quarantine his animals. If you're looking for certain bloodlines, I think it's best to get from the private breeders more than the shop/dealers. Although I know certain dealers are up to speed with that.
Best...

Make certain it is actually a motley ghost, and not just an anery motley. By that I mean, make certain it is truly homozygous for hypomelanism, because the motley gene, in and and of itself, can have a psuedo "hypo effect" on a corn's coloration, but it is not hypomelanistic.

If you are wanting the animal because it is pretty, then it makes no difference. But if you are wanting it for breeding material, whether or not it is homozygous for hypo may very well matter in your plans.

It sounds as though you are looking at getting it from a breeder or individual seller rather than a petshop (since you know it is het for stripe, as well), and if that is the case, you should be able to ask and get a response to that specific very easily. It shouldn't be a problem at all, but I would just be very clear about what it is exactly that you're getting.

Good luck!
