We bought a firebelly newt today.

My son bought a firebelly newt today. I am not sure if I have the tank set up correctly. I know half and half but I didn't seal the plexy glass to the bottom of the tank only the sides in the middle of the tank and now the water is on both sides, is that ok or should I start all over again. Do we need to get a light for the tank? If so what kind of light and lid do we get?

Normal room light should be fine.

Try not to use any lights that produce
heat and keep the enclosure out of direct
sunlight. Water must be free of municipal
chemicals (Use Amquel or Lake Water). All
containers used to carry water and all cage
furnishings must be free of soaps and chemicals
or you will end up with a dead newt.

Heat is the biggest enemy of newts and salamanders.
I've lost few salamanders that were kept in cool, windowless
basements. However, bacterial infections and other problems
tend to quickly arise in warm environments.
