Muscle tone in LTC female Bull?

tangasnake Nov 23, 2004 07:29 PM

I adopted a large female bull about 3 years ago from a women who was intimidated by a few typical displays of pit hissing. She had been given it in order to replace a sweet male california gopher snake she had as a pet for 33 years! "Gigi" had apparently been in a Bay Area discovery center for 7 years previously before I received her. She's healthy in terms of appetite, eye clarity, etc. and has grown from 69" to 78" since I acquired her. But one thing that has puzzled me is that her muscle tone seems very weak overall. When I handle her I have to be careful that she doesn't flop around and hurt herself. I have a few other large pits/black pines and they are quite strong and seem normal. Any one else have a similar experience with long term captives?

I've seen a couple older snakes that resemble what you describe. Include some climbing branches in the cage to get her to use her muscles.
