Help,tailshaking, a sign I have a male gecko?

duffman04 Nov 23, 2004 08:27 PM

I just purchased 2 baby leopard geckos, I put about 6 small crickets in as food along with some mealworms. When one of my Geckos aproached the cricket it batted its tail rapidly then charge and ate em! Now I have done some pre-reading before purchasing my new pets and read that tail waiving is an indication of a male...is this a clear sign that I have a male gecko or do both sexes bat their tails before attacking their live food??

Both sexes will shake their tails when they are excited about food. Males don't start tail shaking until they're sexually mature.

There are a few times leos will shake or wag the tail:
1) Hunting food (much more shake than wag)
2) When determining the sex of another leo (males will wag at each other)
3) when attempting to breed (again, a male behavior)
4) I have seen females do it to assert dominance in a multiple leo cage... kind of like saying "I own all this... get away from me"

Just incase i would have a spare cage/container/something if it does turn out you have 2 males.

Just a pre-caution sorry if it sounds like nagging

Good luck

My female gecko, Kalypso, also wags her tail when she goes for the kill.

I think it just happens when they're happy, eating/hunting, asserting dominance, determining sex and of course trying to mate.
