Young garter not eating, not hibernating

nornor888 Nov 23, 2004 08:49 PM

Hi,
My wild-caught baby garter has not eaten anything since last month, I am wondering what to do. It is not showing any sign of wanting to hibernate, because it is very active and the tank is warm - about 75 degrees. I don't think it wants to shed, because its color is still vivid and the eyes are clear.
We had been feeding the snake worms and fish fillet ever since we caught it in August, but still it wont eat the food even though the worms are collected from the same place and it is the same type of fish we are feeding. What to do?

it is not trying to hibernate b/c you keep the cage temperature at 75 degrees. Try lowering the photoperiod and the temperature adn then see what happens.

You should be able to maintain a baby Garter without hibernating it and I would not recomend it. The feeding problem may be due to something else. What species is it?

its an easter garter, from connecticut. It slithers around the tank a lot, but when I tried to offer it food it hid under its rock.

I guess I can't assume you've already tried this -

Put the food in the tank and leave it there for a few hours of peaceful daylight and also all night. Check inthe morning and dispose of if not eaten. Sometimes they're just shy.

Thank you for your suggestion, but if I leave the worm in the tank for too long it will shrivel up and die. And if I leave a piece of fish in there it will shrivel up and dry up too. So what should I do?

Could you go to a local pet store and get some little Rosy Red minnows? Put those in a shallow tupper ware dish and they'll last for a long time.

You also may want to find some slugs under a log in the woods. They loooove slugs. Try other food items, as previously suggested the rosey minnows, guppies, maybe even a pinky mouse.
