Just Wondering......

SnakeCharmer377 Nov 23, 2004 10:05 PM

Hello,

My name is Chris and I am a regular visitor to this forum. I enjoy all of the wonderful pictures and posts that you all provide. I am hoping to buy a camera around Christmas and I was just wondering if anyone had any brand suggestions. I asked the same question on the photography forum but didn't get much help. I have around $250 - $300 to spend. I was thinking about getting a Canon Rebel and a macro lense, but I would really like to get a digital camera. I want a camera that is capable of close up shots but is set up where I myself wont have to get too close. I am a college student and I do alot of field documentation, so I take alot of pics anyways. I hope one day soon I can post pics along with all of you guys. Any help is appreciated and once again, thanks for the great forum!!!

Chris, might I suggest any of the Sony Cybershot digital cameras? I got mine almost 4 years ago, and I still love it. Back then I paid $300 for it, so I'm sure now, they are MUCH better for the same price or less. Mine is a 1.3 MP and I doubt they even make them with resolution that low anymore. Just go to Best Buy or a similar electronics store and see which ones you like.

I bought my wife a Canon a80 power shot. It is a real nice camera. I bought earlier this year. I paid 400$ for it, but it is selling for around 300$ now. It is 4 megapixels. It is very highly rated camera. The only problem is alot of digital cameras have a slow shutter speed. You push the button, making it bad for action shots. It could be operator error though.

Chris,

What kind of camera you get, and how much you spend will depend on what you plan to do with the photos.

If you only plan to use the photos on a computer, then you can get a much less expensive, lower resolution cam because you would only wind up downsizing the photos from a higher resolution cam anyway (which results in a certain degree of quality reduction).

If you plan on making paper prints of your photos, or doing any higher end editing, then you should spend more money and get a higher resolution cam.

Of course, depending on your photographic skills or requirements, you will also have to consider what kind of options/abilities you want the cam to have (i.e., manual focus, shooting modes, etc.).

This probably doesn't help much, but perhaps this will at least help you to identify which direction you might want to look in.

Let me chime in with my own question.I'm a semi serious photographer with 35mm roots. My current dinosaur is a Canon A1 which I've had since the 70s, but still takes quality photos.

What do I need in a digital camera to get similar results, with the fringe benefit of computer posting? Any specific recommendations? Price? Thanks.

Everyone else here gets to show off their babies and I'm getting jealous.

Lloyd this is my 2 cents on the cameras that you and I both use(35mm). For printed pictures use the Canon A1 you have and get a picture cd-disk with the prints. So you will have really nice digital pictures to post with and send by e-mail. Then research the digital camera you will need as a semi serious photographer. There is just to many options out there to recommend one.
