santa cruz gophers?

gopherlover Jul 01, 2003 11:28 AM

Does anyone have any pics to post of santa cruz gopher snakes?
I remember seeing one when I was visiting my grandparents in santa cruz when I was 6. It would be nice to see one again. Please post any available pics of these elusive pits.

Good luck with you snake(s)!

A couple months ago while I was at UC Santa Cruz my friend found a nice 3 and a half footer in the rock quarry. He was pretty friendly too. What's the difference between a Santa Cruz gopher and a Pacific gopher?

A gopher snake located near the town of Santa Cruz, Ca would
be a Pacific gopher snake. A smaller gopher snake located on
the island of Santa Cruz and some other Channel Islands off
southern CA would be Pituophis catenifer pumilis, a dwarf race
seldom exceeding 3 feet. The common names for it include Santa
Cruz gopher, or Channel Islands gopher. It looks like a San Diego
and there's a picture in April 2001 Reptiles, but I don't have
a scanner. Sorry for the rambling!
