tail injury

Po Nov 24, 2004 12:50 PM

hi!
i work for a cat/dog vet and rescue herps in my home, because of this we have started to see herps once in a while, im teaching the DVM, (im a vet tech), anyway one of our dog owners just got a baby iggy for his son, while they were cleaning the cage a log dropped on its tail, it has a large laceration on the undersie, we cleaned it well and closed it with tissue glue and applied a small padded splint, this was last night, he is comming back today for a banadage check and some anti biotics (i have the dosage in refreance books) just wondering if there was anymore we could do, im really afraid he will drop the tail and the owner is upset about this. any help would be great!
and yes id love to send him to a exotic vet bvut the one we know in our area is not in the office much and going to the large specalty clinic is out of the question for them due to $$
thanks!

Hey, one thing you (they) could do is to soak him every now and then, just to keep it clean, till it gets better. I don't think he's going to lose his tail.. Don't worry, he will be all right sooner than you expect. Just keep it clean. And medicate it.
Take care and good luck,

That would loosen the scab and let bacteria in. Wounds need to be kept clean and dry. To clean it if it gets dirty, use diluted Betadine and a bit of cloth and gently scrub the area.

If the injury did not trigger a tail break then it will heal. If the injury did trigger a tail break, the tail parted at a facet and cut off the blood flow to the downstream end of the tail. You'll know whether that happened within a week.

My rescued adult female lost 4 of her fingers. And what did I do? Soaked her. It healed sooner then I thought. Also, my beardie once got stucked between 2 large rocks in his tank, and trying to get out he cut his tail. it was a pretty nasty wound. And I soaked him using clean warm water. It kept it clean and his tail was just fine a couple weeks later. I see no reason not to soak a wound to keep it clean.
It's the same with us.
Take care,

Dan
