why is my monitor rubbing his nose around in the ground?

tann Nov 24, 2004 02:14 PM

Critter is a Sav. and he almost always rubs his nose in the dirt or on the piece of slate I have in his house under his basking lamp. The thing is, he does this during/after eating.

Good observation, Most every individual of all species(broad statement here) washes his face after eating. EVEN wild ones.

The why????? got me. I can theorize all day about this, but no real answer. FR

ok, so it's normal. I kept thinking maybe he needs something rough to get the shedding skin off or maybe I just have a retarded lizard, lol.

I feed him some chicken livers sprinkled with cal. and he loved it. He kept lapping up the blood and I guess thats what caused him to rubb around in the dirt alittle more today.

Now I don't have any letters in front of my name and have never been in the bush to study these critters. This is just a guess.
I "think" that they rub their snout then the dirt after eating to eliminate the sent of fresh prey. Why do I think this? It is from watching my critters. All my monitors do this and I have noticed after eating the savs will check each other out. If one of them don't nose rub before the other one gets to it there will be head shaking and mounting to follow. I have one that will nose rub then go for a swim. Nothing happens after this except basking. Even my blackthroat does this and she lives alone.
I could be wrong, just my guess.

it's kinda funny cause after he does it, he usually licks is mouth, so he's basically eatin dirt.
