(d. auratus) a good starting frog?

Palex134 Nov 24, 2004 05:06 PM

Im thinking of purchasing a pair of adult dentrobatas auratus in the near future. I dont know what color morph I would get yet. I would like to keep a pair in a ten or twenty gallon. I was woundering if they are a good choice for someone who has never had dart frogs before. dentrobatas auratus are my favorite frogs and from what I've learned, they are O.K. beginner frogs. Does anyone have any pics or anyone keep and breed them. Any comments?

thanks

and they have been great. Very easy to keep. Just make sure you have a ready supply of fruit flies and other small insects.

If they are your favorite darts, then I would say "go for it!" D. auratus are great beginner frogs. My only hesitation with recommending them is that they are not necessarily as outgoing as many of the tincs, azureus, or leucs, IMHO.

What color morph were you thinking about getting?

I would probably say the green and black or the blue and bronze colored frogs. I think i'd get the green or blue and black becuase I don't want to spend a lot of money on my first pair of arrow frogs. i've moslty been interested in snake and lizard breeding. I think arrow frogs would be a fun project.

My blue morphs are very pretty (when you can find them.) They were my frist frogs, and are very hardy, but were so extremely shy that even in the nursery tank, in which I made the mistake of using a moss substrate that they were able to bury themselves in, I wasn't sure I even still had one of the most shy until I moved them into the regular tank. They are very hardy, however. I don't think the greens are this extreme, however. They appear to be very hardy and easy to keep in spite of this shy nature in the blues.

I would go with either green & black or green & bronze auratus. I have posted a link to a photo kyle1745 took a month or so ago or one of our male Panamanian Green & Bronze. I think you will agree they are striking!

They are also out all of the time, so are an enjoyable frog to own.

Thanks,
