Picky eaters?

lisa_cristin Nov 25, 2004 05:07 AM

My leos right from the beginning have ate everything I have given them... until recently. I few months ago I started breeding mealworms which I have been feeding to them about half of the time. I have been feeding store bought mealworms the other half of the time. Gradually they have begun to refuse the smaller mealworms that I have bread. Are they just being picky, or could there be something wrong with the worms? I gut load them with carrots and grains. I also change the substrate every month or so. I would change it more often but I don't want to throw out the eggs and tiny worms. I don't think mold is a problem as the mealworms are thriving, out of 400-500 I have yet to see one dead. I don't get it! The ones from the store barely move and barely eat, they just seem like an unhealthy choice. It would be so nice to be self sufficeint (which I am almost at) and not have to support the evil pet trade.

Lisa how small are they?

Sometimes they become used to the Shape/size, orientation of an insect. They may be too small for them to notice.

I've noticed mine when i give them different foods every now and then, they almost forget or don't recognize crix as food until they eat one.

Keep rearing the mealies, higher temps will help accelerate their growth
Good luck

The mealworms are about half full grown, so pretty small. The ones that come from the pet store are huge. They are about 3/4 the size of a superworm, but they aren't because they are no where near as active.
