The corn snake was named for the Native American corn, or Maize, because the big black and white checkers resembles the coloration of the corn. Not because they were found in corn fields. The corn snakes reddish and orange coloration stands out against most foliage, but makes for great camoflauge in the habitat they are mostly found in. For instance, here in KY, the habitat they are found in has a heavy influence of the red clay dirt and some pine/cedar stands. They blend in beautifully with the clay dirt and pine/cedar needles!! Look at the different "natural" color phases of the corn snake depending on the environment. For instance the Miami phase, is found in the limestone-floored southeast Florida coast. The ground there has a different hue to it, and the corn has adapted to survive.
The rosy corn, the kisatchee corn, and the ssp great plains rats, are all different. This is why I find the corns and rat snakes so appealing, the different colors of the ssp and locale species!! Who needs all the high end morphs when Mother Nature supplies her own wide variety of "morphs"! LOL

>>I could be wrong but I always thought cornsnakes were named after corn because they were first found in corn fields eating the rodents, not because they resembled actual corn. Although either origin could be true so who knows! lol.
