I keep it on a timer - goes on for 10 minutes every couple of hours. Depends on the humidity really - you may need to run all day or maybe just acouple oftimes a day.

wow - great to see a pic of the pvc pipe connection! I knew it could be done but I never thought of running it that far. I was just going to get a small length for direction and still keep it on top of the cage. Does it fit directly into the opening? What do you put around the junction so it doesn't leak?

thanks!

Its 2" piping. There are 2 adapter pieces to make it fit to the tank. One is siliconed to the tank and the other is on the main piece. It just sits right on there, I was concerned about it leaking but it never did. If it did I was going to use a rubber gasket or something of that nature. Didnt take long to build. I brought the tank part to lowes and home depot and rummaged through the pvc parts until I found enough pieces to make a fit.

Hi I had a question on the end piece. Is the end piece that sits on the cage sealed and you just drilled holes in the pipe itself?

roocat71 Nov 25, 2004 08:33 PM

I am not sure if you can tell but there are 2 extensions at the top, not one – I got a “T” adapter to do it. The end pieces have caps siliconed in. When using a hacksaw you may not get a clean cut so there were subtle gaps when adding the caps on. The silicon filled them in so no mist would leak. I drilled holes on the under side 1 inch apart – the holes were big enough to fit a pencil in – I even drilled into the “T” piece. If I were to do it again I may have drilled smaller holes. Mist comes out through the end holes but not as much compared to holes closer to the humidifier. I think smaller holes would have added pressure forcing mist to the end holes. Either way I am very happy with the end result - does the job. I highly recommend this. My cham likes to hang out in the mist. He puts on his “shower” colors when he lounges in it. I plan on doing my brev enclosures next so I can rely on the humidifier for humidity and not a lot of water.

Where did you get your humidifier from? Also have you had any issues with mold or mildew build up in the area?

lele Nov 26, 2004 07:32 AM

Not sure where roo got it but I use a Sunbeam Health at Home which works great. I use Brita filterd water, b/c we have very hard well-water, and just wash it out regularly

See the link for the humidifier. Its only been running a week so I doubt I have mold but I plan on checking this weekend. I also plan on cleaning it in the bath tub when need be.

Hmm, would a cheaper "wally-world" version do the same thing? I have a new Vics (obviously w/o the menthol addative) one that I was thinking of using for one of the cham cages... Any drawbacks that anyone can see to the use of it?
Thanks!

I got my Sunbeam at K-mart for about $25 or $30. it's model #699

Is your vicks a cool mist humidifiers or vaporizer? I don't think you want to use a vaporizer and they also don't seem to put out as much steam.

You can also use a bushing in the connector and run 3/4 pipe

Did that humidifier come with a built in timer?

No, I went out and got a digital timer at Home Depot.

Thanks for the reply, I was wondering if you'd see it, being it's so far down the page.

So then do you just plug the humidifier cord into the timer? I have timers for my lights obviously, but they aren't digital.
That's a really nice setup you have there. I really need a humidifier, it's so dry here now.

Yeah, the humidifier plugs into the timer. You will need a digital in order to have multiple on/off times unless you plan on running it all day long like the lights. I wouldnt suggest running it all day long.
