Exotic Venomous Snake Permit in California

janos79 Nov 25, 2004 12:58 PM

Hi, I've recently moved to California and have heard that I need one of these permits to keep venomous snakes. Does anyone know where, how I can go about obtaining one? Any special requirements?

California residents are only permitted to keep native California venomous, not exotics. Additionally, you may only keep 2 of each species of native venomous. There is supposedly a permit to keep exotic venomous, but either it's incredibly hard to obtain or only available to professional institutions (i.e. zoos, universities) because I haven't heard of any exotic hot keepers in Cali. There is no permit required to keep native venomous in California.

Unless you got the permit years ago, you wont be able to get it without an educational goal. The permit requires two years of experience with each individual species you wish to obtain. That means get a job cleaning cages at a zoo. Contact here for restricted species info at ca fish and game916) 227-1305
