Knights anoles and tf's and a quick food q's

HerpGirl Jul 01, 2003 01:11 PM

i should be getting a pair of knights to breed soon. hopefully i can get 1 on sunday. my question is, is there any tf species that can be kept with them without being eatin? like a whites tree frog(adult?)i know the greens or anything similarly sized would get eaten.
i also want to know how good pinkies are for knights. have u ever had any eat rosie reds? i havent read anything on it but it would be interesting.

Hi,

Some Knights eat pinkies and some do not. As part of a varied diet they are great for them. I wouldn't trust a large Knight around any species of tree frog. I've read literature accounts of Knights killing, not eating, spiny-tailed and rhinocerous iguanas. Granted a frog is not an iguana, I'm just pointing out they are aggresive animals that can kill another species that can't be eaten. Knights' normally breed in the spring and lay eggs during the early summer. If you haven't had a pair that has mated already, you may not get lucky this time around. I have a trio in an outdoor enclosure here in SE Virginia. I get eggs every couple of weeks, but have not observed any more mating behavior. Here is a photo of my male gulping down a meal. I won't say what, as not to suffer the wrath of some members of this forum. Just keep in mind Knights also eat other lizards.
Good luck with your breeding attempts, let us know how you fair.

yes i already know that they will eat anoles like anolis carolinensis but i have some and started with them and i dont think i could do that. im actually still mad that my ribbon snake got out and into my anole enclosure.. u can read the post if u want on the ribbon and garter forum and the escaped herps forum... but needless to say none of the anoles got hurt/killed/ or eaten, but my green tf is now gone... stoogie snake ate him...grrr...oh and now he is still loose! sigh...sorry i am venting again..

p.s. what is your knight eating in that picture?

Here is a BW photo of a female cage mate. She is eating a "feeder" green anole. I would not normally buy another species of anole to feed my Knights, however the pet shop was specifically selling several anoles as feeders for $2 each. I figured I might as well get some to feed my sometimes finicky Knight Anoles before some kingsnake or hognose breeder got them all to benefit their snakes. I hope that doesn't sound to cruel. My Knight's really enjoyed them, except my captive born female, she just ignored them.

at least not any more than a mouse does but i dont usually see feeder anoles around and i would feel really bad giving them one that is meant to be a pet... although most of the pet ones usually dont live any better though

Heh this might sound cruel though.. we have a real problem with squirells of course when you feed birds you will. so we kill them but we eat them lol tastes like chicken. we got one that was preggo.. My knights LOVED them LOVED the baby squirells.. mine also enjoy all kinds of fruits bannannas cherrys black berrys even some hamburger meat raw with nothing in it but only a small bit as a treat. My knights have eaten by ax a few anoles they are such naughtys. I have two 5 lined skinks living happily in the cage my knights hang out in during the daytime. I have two eggs right now in some soil and on the window ledge im hoping that will hatch.

Um, actually, I think it sounds pretty cruel!

Im paying 7.dollars for anoles each but i would just like to know if they are smaller and healthier or just cheap selling anoles.

I wouldn't keep a knight anole with any species of frog, especially not a tree frog. Although a Whites would be a better decision than a GTF, like you say, I'd plan on even a Whites getting hurt in the situation. And the environments aren't quite the same, especially considering they come from different hemispheres and all.
