need help building Tegu enclosure

antares Nov 25, 2004 08:58 PM

I need to build a 6'L x 2'H x 2'W enclosure for my Argentine B&W Tegu. I want to build it out of Acrylic because I figure just putting the five pieces together would be easier then using plywood. I have no idea what I'm doing so unless someone can suggest something better, I'm stuck with Acrylic. It needs to be able to hold moisture without leaking, and strong so my tegu can't break out.

I'd like to know what I should use to put the acrylic together. What sealants, what can i use to solidify the base, anything.

I was also wondering how I would build a top for this. I guessed just some strong metal mesh in a wood frame but I wasn't sure if that would be good.

I'd like any possible suggestions, tips, ideas. Thanks very much.

Actually the opposite is true - acrylic is much more difficult to work with that plywood. On a more practical note, the thermal gradiant required for a Tegu could very well warp acrylic. On top of all that is the fact that a Tegu will scratch acrylic to the point of opaqueness.

3/4" plywood held together with screws and glue. Seal the interior with a lamination of Fiberglass Reinforced Panel (aka FRP board) or a thick coat of West Systems Epoxy.
